CIP Lab

PCs are available for student use on the 4th floor. When no classes are taking place, these computers can be used for independent and group work.

The CIP Lab is available to all students—as long as no classes are being held. First, check the room reservation schedule to see if it is available at the desired time. If the room is occupied by a class, you can also use the computers in the student lounge, which have the same software and programs installed.

You can log in to all computers on campus using your campus ID or LRZ ID.

Server structure

The data you work with in the CIP lab is stored on a server with different read and write permissions and data exchange options. On the computers on campus, you will find the following drives under "This PC":

Instructors can provide data for their respective courses on this server.

Students do not have write access here—they can copy data, but cannot change the original data.

Subdirectory "_CIP IFS Austausch"

Students have write access here. This drive is primarily used for the temporary storage of data for exchange between students.

Directories here are moved to the archive at regular intervals and later deleted. The respective deletion rules can be found in an info file in this folder.

Only YOU have access to this drive! You have 50 GB of storage space for your own files. Data is backed up daily by the LRZ, making this drive suitable for backing up important data.

All files that you have saved on your personal drive will be available to you for up to 3 months after the end of your studies. After that, all of your data will be deleted.

The directories on this drive are accessible throughout LMU and can be used for file sharing if needed. The data here is deleted at short intervals—see the info text inside.

You can also access these drives remotely and connect them to your own computer as network drives:

Data loss

If you accidentally delete your data, there is no guarantee of recovery. However, you have the option of restoring deleted data yourself.

Your data is stored in the LRZ storage cloud in the form of snapshots for 5 weeks, or up to 6 weeks in the best case scenario. You can access 2-hourly, daily, and weekly versions of your data and restore them yourself.

For more details on the storage cycle of snapshots and how to restore data, please refer to the guide. If you have any questions, please contact us.
